Angus Andrews and his band Liars defy expectations with every new album. On their sixth record, WIXIW, they enlisted help from Mute Records founder Daniel Miller to shape their most electronic art-rock record to date.
Liars - “Octagon”
When I say that this second single from the forthcoming Liars album WIXIW reminded me from the opening beats of some of the more atmospheric songs on David Bowie’s little known 1995 album Outside, all I’m intending is the highest praise. I’m not sure what more to add beyond that, except to note that “Octagon” seems to confirm what “No.1 Against the Rush” first suggested, that the Liars are taking a very different direction on WIXIW, and doing it with real confidence. That’s two excellent tracks, anyway. At Amazon you can listen to 30sec. samples of all the songs. There are at least five more that I won’t be surprised to find great additions to the Liars’ catalogue, even if in all probability I won’t be listening to them side by side with tracks from Drum’s Not Dead or Sisterworld - instead I think I’ll have to enjoy carving out a special WIXIW mood for myself.

Previously unreleased My Bloody Valentine song - “Good For You”
A rolling bass line set the stage for funky-enough drums that soon gave way to Muraoka’s shakuhachi, or bamboo flute. A cascading koto sat in for chicken-scratched guitar. “What in the hell do you call this?” I asked. “Shakuhachi Jazz,” Ogawa replied, with an “Isn’t it obvious?” air.
